First Time?

Dear Friends,

My very Roman Catholic mother-in-law used to have a big picture book of the Vatican in her living room.  One day while thumbing through it I hit upon a photograph that has always stayed with me.  It was a bronze statue of St. Peter standing on a pedestal  in Vatican Square.  Beside the statue was an elderly woman, a pilgrim, lovingly reaching up to touch his foot.  It wasn’t her or even the statue I found so moving, it was St. Peter’s foot  itself.  Over the centuries, millions of hands had worn it down to a smooth ledge– saying a prayer, reaching towards God.

St. John’s is kind of like that foot: it’s a spiritual compass.  People come here from many different places to reach towards God.  We’re Conservative, Liberal and everything in the middle.  We’re cradle Episcopalians, Agnostics, Roman Catholics and Evangelicals.  We’re gay and straight.  We’re college professors and firemen, members of the Greatest Generation and the Y Generation.  Some of us have breathed our faith like air and never given it a second thought.  Others of us have been banged up by “church” and come with big wounds and bigger questions. The thing we have in common is our longing.  We want to see how God is at work in the world and in our own lives.

You can get directions for that here!  Instead of looking for people who share your convictions, come to St. John’s and find God in sharing a common prayer.  Instead of looking for a church that can serve you, come to St. John’s and find your way to God in serving others.   Instead of worshipping a far off God, come to St. John’s be a part of the way God is revealing God’s Kingdom in the world right now.

Come and find your way.  We’ve got a map!

In faith,

Laurie
